- Just What Is It That I Do?

- This is the initial meeting with the client to discuss site
functionality, goals, target audience, timeline, design ideas, color
schemes, layouts, and special features such as Flash presentations,
dynamic data, custom programming, commerce features, etc.
- Once we decide on the features the site will have, I go to work to come
up with a graphical concept for the basic layout and navigation
structure.

- Using Photoshop, I create a canvas on which I will develop the layout to
the site.
- It will include the company logo, tag line, some pictures provided by
the client, and a navigation structure complete with rollovers or
dropdown menus based on the decisions reached in the initial meeting.
- Once the layout is complete I move on to the next step in the process.

- Using ImageReady I “slice” my layout into pieces to compress the
graphics into the smallest file sizes possible to create fast loading
pages.
- I also create my animated rollovers by applying various layer states to
each slice.
- Once everything is complete, I save my optimized file and images in the
proper folders for the site.

- Once I have my graphic slices I move to Dreamweaver to design my page
templates and style sheets.
- I do this for each layout to make updating global information down the
road a one-step process.
- Any changes I make to the template or style sheet will update all the
pages based on them in the entire site.
- This makes my job much easier.

- Once I have my templates created, I move to the next step in the
process, which is page creation.
- I take the content provided by the client, whether it is text or
pictures, and create each page. After I save the page with a logical
name I link it to the navigation bars
of the site.

- The next phase in site creation is optimizing it for the search engines.
- As I create each page, I carefully write the tags and page titles to
make the site search engine friendly.
- The key to being listed on top is knowing what keywords to use and how
to word your descriptions. Those are what the search engine spiders read
when they crawl your site to include you in their database.

- These are the meta tags for your site.
They are found at the beginning of the HTML code in the
<head></head> tags.
- They include the page title, description and keywords.
|

- After all pages are created and meta tags inserted, your site is tested
thoroughly for browser compatibility, flaws and bugs in the code to make
sure it looks good at any screen resolution.
- I test each page in Internet Explorer, Netscape and Mozilla browsers to
verify that everything looks and works correctly.

- The next to last step in my job is to upload your site to your server
via FTP. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
- I publish the site to the server and make it “live” on the Internet for
everyone to see.
- Once it has been published we submit it to the search engines to be
indexed.

- Your website comes with it’s own control panel.
- In it you can configure your email accounts, setup a mailing list,
database, e-commerce features, and view your site statistics. I will
show you how to use these features once your site is live.
- You are now part of the World Wide Web.

- Normally, this would be the end of my work, but this is the Internet, a
living world of constantly changing information.
- To stay on top, your site needs to be updated to keep visitors coming
back regularly.
- You need to think about new ways to attract visitors every month.
Whether it’s with a special offer, a newsletter, or other type of
promotion, keeping your site fresh will keep them coming back for more.
- My job is to take your ideas and bring them to life – it’s the
never-ending job of being “Master of the Web”.

- Your website is an extension of your business – it’s your virtual
showroom to millions of visitors. It should be professional and well
written.
- Often, it is the first impression your potential customers will have of
you. Use it wisely. It can either make you or break you.
- A well designed site will show your professionalism to everyone who
visits and make them want to do business with you.
- Keep in mind that you are not limited to local customers. Your site has
the potential to be viewed by people from all over the world, and every
one of them is a potential buyer.
- It is the most cost effective form of advertising that you have.
- It should be interactive, interesting, inviting, eye-catching and most
importantly, it should convey your business persona to the world.
- The most important rule of thumb – do it right the first time because
you only get one chance to make a first impression.
